"Global oil-market tightness is manifesting itself in cracks, not crude."
Diesel does not usually make front-page copy. This week it has. The U.S. diesel crack spread — the margin a refiner earns turning a barrel of crude into diesel — closed above $106 a barrel on September 1, an all-time record, breaching the century mark for the first time in the fuel's history. Retail diesel is near its highest price since the Iran war began, at $5.63 a gallon. Refiners are the visible beneficiary: Valero and Marathon Petroleum shares have roughly doubled year-to-date, Phillips 66 is up 66%, and the sector has posted a string of 52-week highs through the week.
The mechanism is not mysterious, and it is the same one this book has carried in Theme 12 (Aviation Fuel / Jet Crack Spread) since the spring: the Strait of Hormuz remains a live chokepoint, Ukrainian drone strikes have knocked Russian refining capacity offline and prompted a Russian diesel export ban, and permanent refinery closures plus war damage have cut global refining output by an estimated 4.5 million barrels a day this year. Global supply of the *finished product* is scarce in a way that raw crude is not — which is exactly why refiners, not producers, are capturing the windfall. Entering autumn, the setup gets tighter still: heating-oil demand and Brazilian agricultural diesel demand both pick up in the coming weeks, against inventories already at the lowest seasonal level on record.
Today's tape
Equities are firmly higher into the holiday weekend. As of the early afternoon session the S&P 500 is up roughly 1%, the Dow has added over 600 points (+1.1-1.2%), and the Nasdaq is ahead 1.3-1.4%, led by a recovery in AI-adjacent names after yesterday's volatility. The VIX has fallen roughly 4% to the 14.6 area, Treasury yields have eased, and gold is up a striking 2.7% to a fresh high near $4,534. Crude is firmer too, up roughly 1% intraday, consistent with the ongoing Iran-driven risk premium underneath the diesel story above. Broadcom fell as much as 3-4% despite an earnings beat — guidance disappointed, exactly the pattern this book was positioned for via yesterday's fresh AVGO shorts, several of which were closed profitably this morning before the stock's full move played out.
The book: unwinding what yesterday's whipsaw built
Today has been almost entirely a closing session. Of 46 active pairs, the book executed roughly 33 trades — new opens and closes — working through the concentrated DELL, AVGO, HPE, and NVDA exposure that accumulated over the prior two sessions. The pattern has been consistent: pairs opened at the height of yesterday's volatility (several at double-standard $200k/side sizing) were closed today as DELL, HPE, and other names retraced, crystallizing gains on the double-sized winners (P92's HPE leg alone contributed over $24,000) while also taking real losses on the older, lower-entry DELL-short cohort (P46, P53) that yesterday's price action caught from the other side. The realized register moved by tens of thousands of dollars in both directions today — a clean illustration of what a thematically concentrated book looks like when its anchor names actually move.
Constraint-theme registry check — six themes engaged, plus diesel
Per the canonical registry (v7, 2026-09-01), checked this session before drafting. Six of the registry's twenty themes are engaged below with a genuine tape-to-thesis link; the remaining fourteen were checked against today's news flow and found unmoved — no new development surfaced for Themes 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 19, or 20 in today's session, and Theme 11 (Platinum-Group/Specialty Metals) shares P17 with Theme 4 below but has no independent development of its own today. This check is logged to the registry file itself as of this edition (see provenance note in the registry's own changelog, to be appended as v8).
Theme 12 — Aviation Fuel / Jet Crack Spread (now properly a diesel & refined-products story)
This is today's spine. The registry's own v6 log already flagged that Theme 12's driver rotated from physical Hormuz scarcity toward sanctions friction and freight/war-risk premia; this week's record diesel crack confirms that rotation is still live and has, if anything, intensified via the Russian refinery disruptions layered on top of the Gulf situation. The theme's live pairs (P31 XME/DAL, P33 STNG/ICAGY, P40 VLO/AAPL, plus P59 MPC/TLT and P69 VLO/META as refiner-long expressions elsewhere in the book) sit on the right side of a genuinely record-breaking margin environment.
Theme 18 — T11 AI-Capex/Electricity Relative-Value Cluster
Still the book's largest single theme by pair count and gross exposure. Today's DELL and AVGO whipsaws are Theme 18 in miniature: the same AI-infrastructure demand thesis that makes these names attractive shorts (rich valuations on hyperscaler capex) also makes them capable of violent single-session moves on their own earnings, which is precisely what both DELL (up 15.8% on 9/2) and AVGO (down as much as 4% today despite a beat) have now demonstrated within one week.
Theme 13 — Memory / Semiconductor Demand Sink
SNDK activity was heavy this week: multiple SNDK-long pairs opened and closed, with SNDK trading up through the $1,530–$1,570 range over 48 hours. The demand-sink thesis (memory pricing power flowing from AI infrastructure buildout) continues to hold up mechanically even as individual pair entries and exits vary by the hour.
Theme 14 — Sovereign Credibility / Long End
Still no dedicated live pair (a standing gap the registry has carried since v3), but the theme is adjacent to several book positions shorting TLT and VGLT (P57, P59, P58, P62, P98, P101). Treasury yields eased today alongside the equity rally, a reminder that this theme's "MOVED" status from Fed Chair Warsh's Jackson Hole keynote (inflation blamed on the Fed itself, no forward guidance offered) remains the more important structural thread than any single day's yield move.
Theme 7 — Smelting-Capacity Gap (copper + aluminum)
P15 (FCX/APTV) and P30 (SCCO/TECK) remain open and largely undisturbed by this week's DELL/AVGO/diesel volatility — a useful reminder that not every theme in a diversified book moves on the same catalysts, which is exactly the point of running six-plus themes rather than one.
Theme 4 — Silver, Paper versus Physical
P17 (SBSW/HMC) continues to run; gold's sharp 2.7% move today is the kind of precious-metals tape this theme is adjacent to, even though P17's direct expression is silver-side, not gold, and today's move is a gold-specific development that does not, on its own, confirm a Theme 4 thesis move — noted here rather than overstated.
Calendar of events through end of October — the volatility setup
Lars's instinct that "things should start to rock and roll next week" is well-supported by what is actually on the calendar. The next eight weeks carry an unusually dense run of scheduled catalysts on top of the still-live Iran/Hormuz and Russia-refinery threads:
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| Fri Sep 4 | August jobs report (Employment Situation), 8:30am ET — consensus near +58,000 payrolls, unemployment ~4.1%; last full labor read before the September FOMC. |
| Mon Sep 7 | Labor Day — U.S. markets closed. |
| Fri Sep 11 | August CPI, 8:30am ET. |
| Tue–Wed Sep 15–16 | FOMC meeting; rate decision and press conference Sep 16, 2:00pm ET. |
| Fri Oct 2 | September jobs report, 8:30am ET. |
| Wed Oct 7 | FOMC minutes (September meeting), 2:00pm ET. |
| Mon Oct 12 | Columbus Day — bond market holiday; equities open. |
| Wed Oct 14 | Beige Book, 2:00pm ET. |
| Fri Oct 16 | Standard monthly options expiration. |
| Tue–Wed Oct 27–28 | FOMC meeting; rate decision and press conference Oct 28, 2:00pm ET. |
Note: last year's federal fiscal year-end (Sep 30) brought a government shutdown that delayed BLS data releases for weeks. No 2026 funding lapse is confirmed as of this writing, but the Sep 30/Oct 1 window is worth flagging as a recurring structural risk to the October data calendar above, not a certainty.
Layer the still-active Iran/Hormuz situation, the Russian refinery disruptions feeding the diesel story, and the Fed's own new chair delivering an unusually combative Jackson Hole message onto two FOMC meetings and three major data prints in eight weeks, and the setup for a genuinely volatile October looks less like a hunch and more like an actual convergence of scheduled and unscheduled catalysts. Positioning into that window — sizing, theme concentration, and how much of the DELL/AVGO/NVDA whipsaw this week gets treated as noise versus signal for what October holds — is worth a dedicated conversation before the holiday weekend, not folded into today's closing-trade cleanup.
