Operation Epic Fury (OEF) · Status: PRE-MARKET / NRT (provisional) · Book: 37 active pairs · Realized: +$547,595.36 (frozen) · Provisional ITD: $377,704.93 · Macro: -23K payrolls, records, CPI Wednesday
UNSETTLED · PROVISIONAL — pre-market NRT edition. Marks are the Friday, August 7 settled closes (last available prints), single-source; Day %Δ is measured against the August 6 settled close. This edition does not mark or update the book of record.
Key numbers (provisional, NRT)

Bad News, Record Highs: The Tape Buys a Shrinking Payroll — Pre-Market, Monday, August 10, 2026

Brass Rat Capital LLC · Lars Toomre, Managing Partner

A weak jobs report hardened the rate-cut case and pushed the S&P to a record on Friday; the book heads into Monday marked to those closes, with an Atlassian short as its biggest drag and Consumer Price Index (CPI) data looming Wednesday.

USS Taylor (FFG-50) passes a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Department of Defense photograph, public domain, via Wikimedia Commons. Chosen because oil is firming on chokepoint risk into a week whose hinge is Wednesday's CPI.
Observances, August 10: Ecuador Independence Day (the 1809 Quito uprising); National S'mores Day and National Lazy Day in the United States; Abai Day in Kazakhstan. On this day in 1675, Charles II founded the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, later home of the Prime Meridian — a fitting note for a market watching the clock into Wednesday's CPI print. Week ahead: a quiet Monday calendar; July CPI on Wednesday, August 12, is the pivotal release. Markets fully open.
“The market can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent.” — widely attributed to John Maynard Keynes (attributed, unverified in exact wording). A caution for a tape that greeted a shrinking payroll with record highs.

I. Bad news, record highs

Friday delivered the kind of split-screen that defines a late-cycle tape. The July employment report showed nonfarm payrolls falling by 23,000, the first outright monthly decline in years, with unemployment at 4.1%. The equity market took the miss and rallied: the S&P 500 closed at a record 7,757.64, up 0.62%, while the Nasdaq gained 1.30% and even the small-cap Russell 2000 rose 1.10%. The mechanism was the bond market. A shrinking payroll hardened the case for near-term rate cuts, and the 10-year Treasury yield fell four basis points to 4.65%; lower discount rates, not stronger fundamentals, did the lifting.

The Tau Intelligence Engine flags the reflex directly: a market that treats deteriorating labor data as good news is pricing the policy response, not the economy. That works until it does not — the Sahm Rule, which reads recession risk off exactly this kind of unemployment drift, is worth watching if the next print confirms the trend. Going into Monday, the calculus shifts again: crude is firming on Strait of Hormuz risk, and Wednesday's Consumer Price Index is the week's hinge. An oil-driven upside surprise would put the rate-cut trade and Friday's record in direct tension.

II. Atlassian's melt-up

The single largest move on the tape Friday was Atlassian, which jumped roughly 35% on its earnings report — a violent, gap-driven repricing rather than a drift. For the book, that matters because Atlassian sits on the short leg of P18 (long GitLab / short Atlassian). A 35% move against a short is the sort of event that dominates a day's book-level number on its own, and it does here.

The read is not that the position was wrong, but that a single earnings gap can swamp an otherwise diversified pair book for one session. P18 pairs two software names against each other; the long leg, GitLab, rose about 4.5%, a respectable move that was simply overwhelmed by the short. The pair remains a bet on relative value between the two, and the size of Friday's dislocation is itself the argument for holding a diversified book rather than concentrating the software exposure.

III. How the book sits going in

Marked to Friday's closes, the book carries a provisional day profit and loss of ($37,165.21) for the Friday session, with active unrealized at ($169,890.43) and a provisional inception-to-date figure of $377,704.93. These are last-available-print marks, not a fresh Monday quote, and they do not update the book of record. The largest single drag is P18 (long GTLB / short TEAM) at ($50,123.98), the Atlassian short discussed above.

On the other side, the best pair going in is P29 (long CENX / short BA) at $7,038.89. The book's structural tilts are unchanged since August 4: long the Corning and Generac AI-industrial complex across eleven pairs, with offsetting mega-cap technology shorts. That concentration is the swing factor for the week — it cuts hard in both directions, and Wednesday's inflation print is the most likely catalyst to move it.

IV. Pair book

All 37 active pairs, marked to the Friday, August 7 settled close and sorted by day profit and loss, descending. The long leg is stacked above the short leg in every per-leg column. The price column is NRT (last available print, provisional); Day %Δ is measured against the August 6 settled close. RSI-14 is not populated this session, and ten thin names are carried at their last verified marks, flagged with a double dagger. Nothing here marks or updates the book of record.

What to Watch

  • July CPI, Wednesday, August 12. The week's pivotal release. After a payroll miss that the tape read as rate-cut fuel, an oil-driven CPI upside surprise is the tail that would put Friday's record and the rate-cut trade in direct conflict.
  • Oil and the Strait of Hormuz. Crude is firming into Monday on chokepoint risk; the book's energy longs (Valero, Marathon, Chevron) are its beta to the barrel, and a further move sets up the refiner pairs.
  • The payroll trend and the Sahm Rule. One negative print is noise; a second would be a signal. A market treating weak labor data as bullish is exposed if the growth scare becomes the story.
  • The Atlassian short (P18). After a ~35% earnings gap, the counter-case is a give-back; watch whether the move holds or fades in the sessions ahead.
